EXPO: MASHUP THE TUBE

The digital and technological developments during the past few years together with the rise of web2.0 has boosted the traditional found footage film, new films made out of existing “found” footage. Qualitative images and the soft- and hardware to work with them have become easily available to everyone. They are called viral video mash-ups or remixes and, as they are extremely popular, are spread all over the internet. They are, however, the subject of discussions concerning copyright in our digital society. The ISFFL presents a selection of mash-ups and remixes, cooperative projects, installations and live performances. Entrance to the expo is free, every day from 7.00 pm till 22.30 pm and 23 pm on Opening and Closing Day of the festival.

PROGRAMMA
RECUT FILMTRAILERS
A selection of the many recut film trailers that were produced in the past few years. A hit within this genre is the recut trailer of the horror film The Shining: being recut, it has become a humoristic family film. When Harry Met Sally, on the contrary, has become a terrifying thriller. And the inventive mix of Star Trek and Brokeback Mountain presents the latter’s protagonists in a whole new way.

KUTIMAN
The Israeli musician Kutiman was responsible for the internet hype of the last twelve months. He remixed innumerable YouTube fragments into new clips and new music. The results are considered to be the best mash-ups ever made.

TOTAL RECUT
A mix of viral video mash-ups and remixes. The selection contains traditional found footage work, in which online image archives are often used. A nice example is the film made within the scope of Celluloid Remix, initiated by the Dutch Film Museum. Also, websites like “Total Recut Competition” and “Recycled Cinema” give rise to amazing remixes. Furthermore, the selection contains some lighter work as well, like music videos (for example Dwarfed Punk, in which the film classic Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is remixed into a music video of Daft Punk) or remarkable “lipsyncs” (like Ik wil bowlen, in which a scene from Der Untergang is dubbed masterly).

ME SINGING
Me Singing brings 6 people together every time. All sing their favorite songs enthusiastically in front of the webcam in their bedroom or living room. Me Singing makes a group out of these 6 individuals and turns the bedroom and living room into a stage. The result is at times moving, but sometimes painful, often funny but always real and honest.

IN B FLAT
A nice example of the online cooperative project in which different YouTube films lead to a new result. The difference is, however, that this installation is interactive. The spectator/listener can work with the material himself and will create hypnotizing soundscapes on the spot.

DO IT YOURSELF

Do you think you can do this yourself? Please, go ahead and release the mashing remixer in you. With the online ISFFL mash-up tool, you can start working right away. We provide software, an archive of short film fragments and a cool soundtrack. So, all ingredients you need to produce a remixed video clip are present. You can post the result and everyone will be able to watch it. The best entries will conquer a place on the ISFFL website.
