FLEMISH SHORT FILM COMPETITION: SHORT FICTION

2011 was a great year for the Flemish feature film and an amazing one for short film. (read more)Wannes Destoop did very well at the Cannes film festival with ‘Badpakje 46′ (‘Bathing Suit 46′). Sahim Omar Kalifa’s ‘Land of the Heroes’ recently won its sixth international award and scored its 40th festival selection. And International Short Film Festival winner Kevin Meul won awards in Spain and the United States. Just to name a few. In the meantime, a new generation of filmmakers is ready to impress. Out of the many entries, we have selected twenty brand new shorts.

FLEMISH SHORT FILM COMPETITION: ANIMATION


In the wondrous world of animation, many filmmakers experiment with techniques, styles and genres. (read more)This selection of Flemish animation films consists of animated documentaries, impressive 3D films, innovative cut-out animation, patiently hand-drawn films and brilliant stop motion. This year’s program is made up of 11 films, both student films and professional productions.go to program

MILESTONES IN SHORT FILM HISTORY


“Milestones in Short Film History” is a collection of the most influential short films made throughout a century of cinematic history. (read more); It entails thirty movies produced between 1900 en 2000 that are typical of certain movements and evolutions in movie history or that introduced new techniques, procedures, styles, genres or directors.

SHORTS FOR KIDS


The world of short film is home to many gems, made especially for kids. Our team looked at hundreds of animation films from all corners of the world (read more), picked out 30 titles and poured them into 5 compilations for various age categories. Our selection contains a myriad of styles, each film telling its story in its own unique way. Funny and exciting, mysterious and straightforward, beautifully slow and hyperkinetic. Shorts for Kids is a colorful ode to creativity and imagination.

THE LAB


The Lab consists of a varied mix of non-narrative films, bold cross-overs, intriguing experiments and striking visuals. (read more)The one thing they have in common is their urge to think outside the box, play around with expectations and surprise the audience. This year’s program is a bit bigger than usual. Besides two international selections from the entries, the festival is proud to present a short film special, made up of two parts, about one of Belgium’s most well known filmmakers and visual artists, Nicolas Provost. go to program

EUROPE IN SHORTS


Sundance, Clermont-Ferrand, Hamburg and Locarno: our festival team travels all over the world in search of the very best European short films. (read more)Once home, we go through over 2000 entries and select only forty, the cream of the crop of European shorts. The European competition shows films from over 17 countries, including rather small film countries such as Portugal and Bulgaria.

FINEST IRISH SHORTS


Over the last ten years, Irish filmmakers have consistently drawn admiring glances at international film festivals and taken home several prestigious awards. (read more) Five Oscar nominations – one win – European Film Awards, UIP Awards, selections and awards at Sundance, Clermont- Ferrand, Berlin and Tampere. The Green Isle is stepping out of the shadow of its big film brother, the United Kingdom. A great time to focus on Ireland and show you a selection of the ‘finest brew’ of Irish shorts.

ANIMATION NATIONS


Animation fans are spoiled for choice this year: there is the Flemish animation film competition, there are short films for kids and our Irish program contains quite a bit of animation too. (read more)But the pick of the litter is, of course, Animation Nations. Festival favorites play tag with graduation projects from the renowned French film school Supinfocom, personal favorites and new films by established directors. One in particular, Rosto, deserves his own special program.

MUSIC VIDEO COMPETITION


During the festival, the cosy STUKcafé is the meeting point for visitors, filmmakers and foreign professionals. Go there for a tasty pasta, a bowl of soup or a sandwich and share your thoughts on the festival. And while you are there, enjoy live bands, DJ sets or a music video compilation, all for free. go to music video program

FILMFESTIVAL DELICATESSEN


When the festival is over, the International Short Film Festival Leuven continues its work as a distributor of Flemish short films in movie theaters. (read more)For several years now, the festival’s highlights have been brought together in a best of the best compilation, shown all across Flanders and in Brussels as ‘Filmfestival Delicatessen’. At this year’s festival, we will be screening our two most recent compilations. ‘Filmfestival Delicatessen 2012′ is planned for release in the spring of 2012. go to program

VAF WILDCARDS


The Flemish Audiovisual Fund support young talent and awards each year the “VAF Wildcards”. (read more)Started in 2005 the VAF awards a total of 260.000 euro in prizes. Young directors who just finished film school get a grant between 40-60.000 euro for their next project. The Wildcard programs consists of all eligible shorts, live action, documentary, animation as well as experimental. go to program
