Over the past year, big movies such as Dune by Denis Villeneuve, Drunk by Thomas Vinterberg and The French Dispatch by Wes Anderson ensured that the cinemas filled up again after months of closure. These award-winning directors once started their career making short films. In fact, the seeds for their later successes can often already be found in these earlier films. Later in their career, some of the biggest names actually return to the short film. It offers them an unprecedented artistic freedom that is impossible with large productions. A nice example is film icon Pedro Almodóvar, who explored short film again this year. A special look (back) at small films by big names.
