Focus on Portugal

Together with Curtas Vila do Conde, Kortfilmfestival Leuven presents two Portuguese programmes. Best of Curtas Vila do Conde takes you all the way from Belo Horizonte to Lisbon, from derailed toilet mushrooms to a team building gone wrong. More interested in Portuguese history? 50 years of the revolution zooms in on the Carnation Revolution. In 1974, Portuguese soldiers stuffed their weapons with carnations instead of bullets and a peaceful coup sent Portugal into a wave of decolonisation and democracy. However, this mix of short fiction and documentary promises much more than just a history lesson, vamos!

Best of Curtas Vila do Conde

Best of Curtas Vila do Conde mixes liveaction fiction and animation in stories that range from healthy social criticism to absolute absurdity. What kind of world opens up when your toilet grows a population of rare mushrooms? How do things end when an architect faces the neighbourhood he threatens to gentrify? Best of Curtas Vila do Condo offers you the answers you need, but also leaves you with some extra questions.

50 years of the revolution

In 1974, one of the most peaceful coups in history took place. Portuguese streets filled with carnations, democracy reigned supreme and centuries of Portuguese colonisation came to an end. What impact did the Carnation Revolution have on the Portuguese population? What consequences does it still have today? 50 years of the revolution takes you back in time and teaches about Portuguese history, but also introduces you to small stories of ordinary people, such as that of a young woman in 1971 who decides that there is more to life than cooking, ironing and looking after others.
