Focus on Austria

Zum Wohl! This year, Austria is the festival's country in focus. To this end, it is collaborating with the Viennese short film festival Vienna Shorts. Festival director Daniel Hadenius-Ebner curated two programmes showing what Austrian short films have to offer. Where one series subverts the age-old cliché of the Austrian feel-bad film, the second will mainly leave you with the question "can people glitch?".

World Wondering

Austrian experimentalism is more than flickering images and noisy sound. A new generation of filmmakers around Anna Vasof, Michael Heindl, Total Refusal or Viktoria Schmid cares little about those (outdated) conventions. They mix genres and approaches, switching seemingly effortlessly from the performative to the humorous and from the political to the personal. They also emphasize sound and music and will show endless new perspectives.

Beyond The Basement

There's a cliché that Austrian cinema limits itself to depressing films with rarely a happy ending. Daniel Hadenius-Ebner single-handedly curated the counter evidence. Beyond the Basement showcases the unique humour of Austrian cinema. The films in this programme capture what it is to be human: occasionally melancholic, but mostly with light-heartedness.
