European Workshop for Film Criticism #3
Kortfilmfestival Leuven 2023 verwelkomt heel graag de derde European Workshop for Film Criticism. Die workshop is het resultaat van een samenwerking tussen END, het European Network for Film Discourse (Filmfest Dresden, Vienna Shorts, Kortfilmfestival Leuven, Vilnius Short Film Festival, Lago Film Fest en FEKK), en het magazine Talking Shorts, met de steun van het Creative Europe MEDIA program. Na de vierdaagse workshop op ons kortfilmfestival, is er een vierdaags vervolg op het Vilnius International Short Film Festival.
Onder begeleiding van gevestigde critici en filmwetenschappers krijgen de deelnemers inzicht in journalistieke praktijken en leren ze de essentiële skills van de filmkritiek aan de hand van korte films en gecureerde kortfilmprogramma's. Het schrijfproces wordt tijdens de festivals redactioneel begeleid en een selectie van de teksten wordt uiteindelijk gepubliceerd op Talking Shorts.
De European Workshop for Film Criticism is een intensieve tandemworkshop in de context van twee kortfilmfestivals. Beide workshoponderdelen verkennen de kortfilmkritiek en haar mogelijkheden. In Leuven worden de "basics" van filmkritiek en de convergerende contexten van programmering en festivals belicht, terwijl de focus in Vilnius ligt op essayistische kritiek.
De begeleider van de tandemworkshop is Savina Petkova, Bulgaarse filmcriticus en programmator die in Londen woont. Ze schrijft onder andere voor MUBI Notebook, Little White Lies, Film Comment, Senses of Cinema en Variety. Ze maakt deel uit van de redactieraad van Talking Shorts en legt momenteel de laatste hand aan een doctoraat aan King's College London over dierenmetaforen en metamorfoses. Savina is ook filmprogrammator voor het Sofia International Film Festival en het Cambridge Film Festival. Ze is lid van de Critics Circle, European Film Academy, BIFA en FIPRESCI.

Kortfilmfestival Leuven 2023 is very happy to welcome the third European Workshop for Film Criticism. That workshop is the result of a collaboration between END, the European Network for Film Discourse (Filmfest Dresden, Vienna Shorts, Kortfilmfestival Leuven, Vilnius Short Film Festival, Lago Film Fest and FEKK), and the magazine Talking Shorts, with the support of the Creative Europe MEDIA program. After the four-day workshop at our short film festival, there will be a four-day follow-up at the Vilnius International Short Film Festival.
Under the guidance of established critics and film scholars, the participants will gain insight into journalistic practices and learn the essential craft of film criticism through short films and curated short film programs. The writing process will be supervised editorially during the festivals, and a selection of the texts will finally be published on Talking Shorts.
The European Workshop for Film Criticism is an intensive tandem workshop in the context of two short film festivals. Both workshop units will explore short film criticism and its possibilities. In Leuven, the “basics” of film criticism and the converging contexts of programming and festivals will be taught, while in Vilnius, the focus will be on essayistic criticism.
The tutor of this tandem workshop will be Savina Petkova, Bulgarian film critic and programmer based in London. Her bylines include MUBI Notebook, Little White Lies, Film Comment, Senses of Cinema, Variety, among others. She's part of the editorial board of Talking Shorts and currently finishing a doctorate at King's College London on animal metaphors and metamorphoses. Savina is also a feature programmer for Sofia International Film Festival and Cambridge Film Festival. Member of the Critics Circle, European Film Academy, BIFA, and FIPRESCI.
The lectures will be held in English.
