Provence

Jurytext: Jury Award Best Debut:
This was one of the most outstanding films of the competition, regardless of the experience of its director. The universality of this story helped the jury to make a unanimous decision. We were all moved and impressed by both the directing and performance of the young actors, in a film which transcends the cliches of the coming-of-age genre.
Special Mention for Best Acting Performance:
De jury erkent de kwalificatie van een jonge actrice, van wie we hopen dat zij een lange en succesvolle carrière tegemoet gaat. Daarom willen we graag Laime De Paep uit ‘Provence’ een eervolle vermelding geven in de categorie Beste acteerprestatie.

A Worthy Man

Jurytext: The winning film tells a story that effectively balances tragedy and comedy without ever losing the integrity of its central character. Through subtle depictions of family dynamics and internal tensions, it provides detailed characterisation of a kind father figure whose dignity is compromised and is subversively shown in the most vulnerable position in his family. Understated cinematography and comedy further complement the emotional impact.

Our Song to War

Jurytext: The jury chose this accomplished documentary for how it used the poetry of magic realism and for its outstanding cinematography. It brings together traditional folklore elements with the consequences of war in this Colombian community. This subject is especially important today, when a lot of cultural heritage like this is threatened across the world. We commend the film for the thoughtful manner in which it depicts its subjects and its formal approach.

Pathetiek

Jurytext: Our winning film can be described as a genuine gesamtwerk in that each of the individual elements are outstanding in themselves. And when they combine, it is a case of multiplication rather than addition. These crucial elements include the scriptwriting, the visuals and sound-design, the directing, the acting and the editing. They all combine to produce a witty, insightful and multilayered short film which encapsulates the best aspects of this format. It is a thoroughly convincing portrait of friendship, playing out against a subtle and musical background.

In the Palace

Jurytext: Great performances do not exist in a vacuum. They responds to the mise-en-scene, they are part of the entire universe of the film. And in this example, this performance simultaneously encapsulates and elevate the creative vision which makes this one the most remarkable achievements of this competition. Brining decades of experience and yet the freshness of a new discovery. This actress conveys the sadness and joy of a woman, facing death in the arms of the past.
