Lake Of Happiness

Jurytext: The film we decided to nominate for the European Film Awards impressed us with its sense of pace, composition, and its breathtaking cinematography. It has a timeless quality that reminded us of some of the masters of eastern European cinema. With few words and striking images, the film takes us on the journey of a young character, determined to follow her own path.

Raketkanon - I Live in a Society

Jurytext: This short documentary impressed us with an unusual intimate portrayal of creative tensions within a band. Starting with a simple conflict, with every click it goes deeper and deeper into the complex dynamics and what's at stake here. With a blunt and authentic approach, the film throws the audience into the midst of messy emotional and social interactions.
With a relentless camera, probing questions and impressive editing, this genuine portrait of a band exposing themselves brutally on camera drew us in and left us astounded as to what we were invited to be part of.

Da Yie

Jurytext: We saw and choose a film that took us on an exciting car ride through a sunny day and very dark night, using expert craftsmanship. It tackles relevant and contemporary themes: the power of money, the vulnerability of children, the power of friendship. This film had one of the best female characters, and an exciting opening scène that lingered on till the end, till the light returned.

Lieve

Jurytext: Their empathic portrayal of a caring and kind character under pressure, against the clock; made us hope that one day, if we ever need to be picked up from the carpet, she will show up. The prize for best acting performance goes to Joke Emmers for Lieve.

Nesting

Jurytext: The sophisticated cinematography of this film is entirely at the service of the narration of the script.
The "framing" of the scenes is really well executed and lifts the short film to a higher level, without ever showing off.
The cinematographer uses a sophisticated, sober, color palette that accentuates the atmosphere of grimness and excitement, but at the same time radiates a sensual beauty. This is the result of the continuity used in light and framework supported by a correct technical interpretation. It's showcase of the craftsmanship of someone who has mastered the subject of cinematography both technically and artistically.
The jury price for cinematography goes to Maxime Lahousse for Nesting.

Gyre

Jurytext: The Jury prize for best debut goes to a film that tells a lot without talking. By guiding their female characters through a subtle change in their relationship, scene by scene, the director tells the story in an understated but never underwhelming way. The location, the casting, the acting, the excellent cinematography, it all adds to the intense atmosphere of youth and longing.

The Walking Fish

Jurytext: We wanted to give a special mention to a film that charmed us with its inventiveness. Drawing on different influences, it creates its own language to tell us the touching story of a metamorphosis, and it uses the magic of the fairy tale to talk about feelings we can all relate to
